Did You Scratch Your Eye?

Learn what to do until your walk-in appointment at Texas State Optical Spring in Spring, TX

Have you ever felt like something’s in your eye, but you couldn’t find it?

Maybe your eye is red and tearing. These are all indications that you may have scratched your eye. If you think that you have scratched your eye for any reason, there are a few things that you should know. First of all, you should never rub your eye. Rubbing your eye in a case like this can do more harm and possibly cause permanent damage.

If a child is the one that scratched their eye, take steps to ensure that they do not rub it. If it’s an infant that scratches their eye, we recommend swaddling them until they can be seen by a Texas State Optical Spring optometrist. Here are a few do’s and don’ts regarding a scratch on the eye.

DO’Sdo

  • Use saline or clean water to rinse out your eye. If an eye cup is not available use a small clean glass, resting the rim of the glass on the bone at the bottom of your eye socket. This process can potentially flush out any foreign objects that are left in your eye.
  • Blink a lot because the act of blinking will remove any small particles of dust and sand from your eye.
  • Use your lower eyelashes to brush away any foreign objects that are underneath your upper eyelid. Do this by pulling your upper eyelid up and placing it over the bottom eyelid.
  • If you noticed that you have light sensitivity in that eye, wear sunglasses. This can help reduce the irritation.

DON’TSdont

  • You may be very tempted to rub your eye, but this can exacerbate the issue and make the scratch worse.
  • Never touch yours or your child's eye with anything. This includes fingers, Q-tips, tweezers or any other object that you might use to remove something from the eye.
  • Stop wearing your contact lenses, contact lenses will impede the healing process and may lead to complications.
